Maine has three major rivers that are currently used for whitewater rafting. We
would like to introduce them to you and tell you a little about each river and
its unique qualities.
KENNEBEC RIVER
- The rafting trip used by all major rafting
companies begins about 12 miles upstream from "The Forks" (confluence of the
Dead River and the Kennebec), at the Harris Station Dam on Indian Pond. The trip
takes you through the Kennebec Gorge and Class II, III, IV and V rapids. The
journey ends back at The Forks.
PENOBSCOT RIVER
- The exciting run on the Penobscot River begins
at the McKay Station below the dam at Ripogenus Lake. The first 2 miles are, to
many, the most exciting of the trip taking you through the Ripogenus Gorge and
some of the most challenging Class V whitewater you'll find anywhere. The next
12 miles involves Class III, IV and V rapids ending at the take-out at
Pockwockamus Falls.
DEAD RIVER
- The Dead River boasts the longest stretch of
continuous whitewater anywhere in the eastern United States - 16 miles! You
begin at Grand Falls and cover Class IV and V rapids that will keep you on your
toes most of the time, ending at The Forks.
