Ice Shanties Must Be Off the Ice by March 27

For Immediate Release: March 16, 2005
Media Contact: Robert Rooks 802-241-3700
ICE SHANTIES MUST BE OFF THE ICE BY SUNDAY, MARCH 27
WATERBURY, VT- Owners of ice fishing shanties must remove them from the ice on or before Sunday, March 27 according to a reminder from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
Vermont law requires the owner of an ice fishing shanty to remove it and any surrounding debris from the ice before the ice loses its ability to support the shanty out of the water, or before the last Sunday in March, the 27th this year.
Owners of shanties left on the ice after the deadline face a fine of up to $1,000 as well as five points toward revocation of their hunting and fishing licenses.
We have been fortunate in having great ice fishing this winter, said Colonel Robert Rooks, chief warden with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. It is important now to make sure shanties are off the ice in order to prevent them from causing safety concerns for boaters after ice-out.
