Wildlife Food Plot Demonstration

WATERBURY, VT - Landowners who want to learn about plantings for wildlife have a great opportunity at a wildlife food plot workshop in Bennington later this month.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department will sponsor a wildlife food plot workshop hosted by Dr. Roland Smith and son Howard Smith on their property in Bennington on April 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Smiths have been managing their land for wildlife for more than a quarter century. Part of their management strategy includes creating wildlife food plots, a practice Howard has been experimenting with for the past six years. Howard, a landscaper and avid outdoorsman, will take the lead in this workshop, sharing the successes and failures he has experienced as a result of his efforts.

The morning's activities will include a discussion of recommendations for creating a successful wildlife food plot, a walking tour of the property to examine food plots in different stages of development, and actual planting of a perennial food plot. A VFWD wildlife biologist will be on hand to answer questions, along with representatives for the USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP). WHIP provides cost-share payments to landowners for practices used to create and improve wildlife habitat, including wildlife food plots. Coffee, tea, muffins, and bagels will be served.

The workshop will be held at 584 Houran Rd. From Bennington, travel west on Route 9 approximately four miles. Houran Road is on the right just before the motor sports store. Approximately ½ mile from Rt. 9, on the right, you will see a mailbox with the Smith name on it. The driveway is directly across the road. Follow the drive to the top of the hill to the barn. There is no fee and the workshop will be held rain or shine. For more information and to register, contact Mary Beth Adler at 802-885-8836.
