NORTHERN NH: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SALMON FRY STOCKING
LANCASTER, N.H. -- It's that time of year again! The New Hampshire Fish
and Game Department seeks volunteers to help stock over a half-million
Atlantic salmon fry in several rivers and streams in the Upper
Connecticut River watershed. People interested in volunteering for the
fry-stocking program should contact Andrew Schafermeyer, Fisheries Biologist,
New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) at (603) 788-3164 or email
aschafermeyer@nhfgd.org. Please call in advance to confirm
participation.
There will be six days of stocking in northern New Hampshire. The upper
part of the Ammonoosuc River from Bretton Woods down to Littleton will
be stocked with the inch-long salmon fry on Friday, May 6. Meeting
place and time is Foster's Crossroads Store in Twin Mountain at 10:00 a.m.
The second day will be Saturday, May 7. Volunteers will meet at the
Wal-Mart parking lot in Littleton at 9:30 a.m. and proceed downriver. On
Wednesday, May 11, salmon fry will be stocked in the Gale River, Israel
River and the Little River. The meeting place for this day will be at
Foster's Crossroads Store at 10:00 a.m.
The following day, Thursday, May 12, the Mohawk River will be stocked.
The meeting place and time will be the NHFG Region 1 office (Lancaster)
at 10:30 AM. On Friday May 13, the Wild Ammonoosuc River will be
stocked. The meeting place will be at the Wildwood Picnic Area on Route 112
in Easton at 9:30 a.m. On Monday, May 16, the Upper Ammonoosuc River and
Nash Stream will be stocked. The meeting place will be the NHFG
regional office in Lancaster at 10:30 a.m.
Volunteers should be prepared for rigorous walking with buckets of
water and fish. Waders, hip boots, or old sneakers are recommended footwear
for stocking. You may get wet, so please bring extra clothing (i.e.
socks, sweatshirt). It is also a good idea to pack a lunch.
The Upper Connecticut River watershed provides some of the best nursery
habitat for juvenile Atlantic salmon. The stocking of salmon fry plays
a vital role in restoring runs of salmon to the watershed. State and
federal fisheries personnel, conservation organizations such as Trout
Unlimited, and other interested citizens perform the stocking.
